SQL – Start with me.

Now the question arise, how to start with it?

You just need one database and you are ready to go with the editor to start working on it.

SQL can be used to

  • Create new databases
  • create new tables in the database
  • For Dropping database
  • For deleting records from the databases
  • For Inserting rows in the database
  • For Updating columns/rows in the database
  • For Renaming tables
  • For creating Views/Stored procedures in the databases
  • For fetching rows from tables
  • For quering/selecting rows from tables etc….


Some common relational database management systems that use SQL are: Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server, Access, Ingres, etc. Most database systems use SQL, most of them also have their own additional proprietary extensions that are usually only used on their system.

If you are looking for free opensource database, I suggest you to go for – MySQL.

Different standard commands to interact with the database are as follow

Data Definition Language ( DDL ) – These commands are used to define  the database objects

CREATE – It’s used to create database objects for e.g. Tables, Views, Stored procedures etc.

ALTER – It’s used to alter database objects for e.g. Tables, Views, Stored procedures etc.

DROP – It’s used to delete database objects for e.g. Tables, Views, Stored procedures with their data in the table.

RENAME – It’s used to rename database objects for e.g. Tables, Views, Stored procedures etc.


Data Manipulation Language ( DML ) – Commands are used in manipulating the data in the table.

SELECT – It’s used to query the data in database tables.

INSERT – It’s used to insert new rows in database objects.

UPDATE – It’s used to update data in database tables.

DELETE – It’s used to delete database objects for e.g. Tables, Views, Stored procedures etc.


Transaction Control Language ( TCL ) – SQL commands are used for managing changes affecting the data. These commands are COMMIT, ROLLBACK, and SAVEPOINT.

COMMIT,Gives access rights to user.

DCL – Data Control Language – security for the database objects.
